POKER STORIES
Beginner's LuckHi players, my name is Trish and I have my own take on "Beginner's Luck" because that's what my friends and other players at the table are always saying to me about the way I play Texas Hold'em Tournaments. But my story should probably be called "New Player Luck" because I always get lucky and do great when I play at a game for the first time in a place that I haven't played before. Friends tell me that it's because the other players don't already have a "read" on me because I'm the "new girl" at the table. The first time I've played at many different places, I always seem to place in the final table and many times get a first or second or third place finish and win some kind of prize. But then when I go back to the same place and try playing again, I don't seem to ever do as good as the first time I played there. I just seem to get better cards my first time at a place. So I keep going to as many different places as I can find even though sometimes my friends think I drive too far just to play in a free game. But my prize winnings have more than paid for my time and gas going to different places. And my favorite story is once I won second place but the nicest prize is that the first place winner and me became really good friends from then on even though I had never met him before playing with him in that game. We used our winning gift certificates to buy each other drinks after the game and we talked for hours and it was really fun. I've met alot of new friends playing these poker games in bars and restaurants. Maybe I'll meet you at one of the games and we'll become friends too. I hope so. See you there! |

This Poker Story happened at a free poker game Pete made it to the final table with four players left in the game. Player A was chip leader with a about 40% of the chips in play. Player B had about 35% of the chips, Pete had about 15% and Player C had about 10%. Pete realized that the prize payout that night at the game was about $50 for first place, about $25 for second, and a couple drink chips for third place. After having survived playing through the field up to this point, Pete was determined to finish "in the money" and so played very conservatively hoping the either one of the big chip stacks would take out Player C or that, because the blinds were huge by this point, that Player C would "blind out". This is both a smart and dangerous way to play, as it poses risks that Pete could end up "blinded out" also. However, Player C went all in and lost to Player A and thus Pete had now managed to place third and win the lowest prize. However, it also left Pete with only enough chips to call one small blind and one big blind. Pete was now the dealer and got absolute trash for hole cards and threw them away. Next hand, Pete was now big blind and again received absolute trash for a hand and threw the hand into the muck. By this time, there was a crowd of people gathered around the table watching the game and remarking that Pete should've just put his little bit of chips in the pot and called with any hand and hoped for the best. So Pete said out loud as he placed his only remaining chips up as the small blind that "Well heck, Player A could get pocket Aces this hand and Player B could get pocket Kings this hand and they go all in and Player A could eliminate Player B and I would win second place with just a couple chips over Player B with his huge stacks." The crowd just laughed at how improbable that would be, especially laughing was a player previously eliminated from the game who was doing the dealing at this point in the game at the final table. Sure enough, Player A went all in, Player B called and Pete was all in already with just the blind and an off-suit 9 and Four in the pocket. Player A turned over pocket Aces, Player B turned over pocket Kings, Pete turned over his trash hand, the flop, turn and river helped neither player A or B or Pete and so Player A eliminated Player B giving Pete second place! As the dealer loudly exclaimed, "It's enough that the odds of that happening are so remote, but the fact that Pete called out exactly what was going to happen makes the whole event even more fantastic!" The players in the crowd talked about the event for weeks and months to other players at other games. And Player B was on tilt for an equally long time! |
Show Me A Game That HasPrize For First Person Out! Hello! The only thing I've ever won in my life playing anything is this t-shirt I got by a promotion on this site so and the only prize I ever get playing poker tournaments in bars is when they give a prize for the first person out! But hey, it's a quick prize. I just never seem to get good cards and when I finally do then someone always seems to have a better hand and I can't win no matter what I do. The other players say that its nothing I did wrong but just that I got "sucked out on" whatever that means. Whatever! I do have fun though. Maybe I am a bigger winner than the players who always beat me because I think that I'm having more fun than them. I bet I am because they are all serious and stuff and I am just relaxing and checking things out. Oh well, maybe I'll win a poker book that tells me how to play better here as the worst player story :-) |
