THE WIFE of army officer and illustrator Captain Seth Eastman, Mary Henderson Eastman gathered the material for this book during seven years in the 1840s at Fort Snelling in what became Minnesota Territory. First published in 1849, Dahcotah; or, Life and Legends of the Sioux presents and unparalleled glimpse into Sioux (Dakota) customs and manners by a writer who had the advantage of long-term residency among the Indians.

THE ILLUSTRATIONS are part of a once-lost portfolio of miniature landscapes that Seth Eastman painted between 1846 and 1848. Describing their quality, art historian John Francis McDermott wrote:

So small that they might have been
painted with the aid of a jeweler's
glass, so sharply distinct that the
artist might have been viewing the
scenes through a telescope, so
sensitive in the use of atmosphere,
so delicate in their tints, these
pictures are a glowing triumph
(for Eastman).

240 pages, 22 color illustrations, 9-1/2" x 7-1/2", Cloth.
